Resident Evil 2
Since I never played the original RE2 (I skipped RE2, RE3, and Code: Veronica), I can't speak to how faithful this one is to the original. Something about the old games just never clicked with me. I mostly blame the clunky controls. RE4's over the shoulder, fully 3D environment was much easier for me to grasp.
The entire game has been remodeled from the ground up in the style of modern day Resident Evil.
I really loved the creepy atmosphere and tension. More recent RE games are more like an action game. RE7 was an awesome return to form, and I am glad they went back to the over the shoulder thing instead of first-person. It really does have that vibe like "I ain't opening that fucking door because I just know shits gonna OH JESUS ITS BEHIND ME." It was the perfect October game.
Most of the game takes place in a police station, that for some reason used to be a museum. This is to wave away why the police station has a key inside a unicorn statue. I digress. It's relatively short, but to get the true ending you need to play as both characters, Leon and Claire. There games take place in exactly the same police station, except the items and keys have all been remixed. It's pretty amazing how they pulled that off.
The absolute best part is fucking Mr. X. About halfway through the game, this 7 foot tall invincible fucker in a trench coat starts stalking you. The rest of the game, it's like a cat and mouse chase where you'll be just hanging out and hear "stomp stomp stomp STOMP STOMP" and you know he's like 2 rooms away so you gotta book it. Then you'll be like yay, I got the key and suddenly SURPRISE MOTHERFUCKER here he comes busting through the window. It's fucking terrifying. Great game.
